Childhood Insists

Childhood insists

Unsatisfied desire
of darned-up hearts,
demands
to make up for what was lost.
The present demand
is not a real presence,
it's the imagined shadow
of a wounded childhood.
The half-empty glass
intrigues
with valiant attempts
at wholeness.
They pluck the petals from daisies
beneath a gray sky,
the last petal
may reveal what the flower knows.
They are buds with the scent
of a thorny past,
they validate the harshness
disguised as joy.

Today it's hard to reclaim
that unfamiliar way of walking,
they challenge each dawn
to be better than yesterday
They fear another collapse
but I tell them:
—That feeling is not yours,
it is a consequence of your beating heart.
