Unforeseen Outcome
Sweltering afternoon;thirst weighs me down.
Before me, an apple:
a tempting, juicy delicacy.
I act without thinking
and take a bite.
A tiny little worm
clings to a seed.
From fright it makes itself thin,
but my enormous mouth
tears it from its home.
In my teeth
there lives a creature
even more minuscule,
hidden among black holes,
with walls eaten away
where millions of streptococcus
break sugar down into acid.
She spies the poor worm
and with strange compassion,
offers him the only thing she has:
her deep cavern.
He accepts it...
he crawls and enters.
The stench is unbearable,
but he has no other option.
A bloodcurdling scream
comes out of my throat.
I run out.
The urgency is clear:
to heal these cavities
so I can smile again
and not let haste
blind me once more.
