Siesta Hour

Siesta hour

The sun strikes the walls
of the old big house.
The crickets clack their wings
counting out chirps,
they alert the little lizards
cavies and grass snakes
that clear a path through the underbrush.
Slippery skunks caught in the act
bathed in flowers.
They are hungry.
The hidden field mice
spy
stammer
beg for mercy and good sense,
drool with fear.
The spider stops weaving,
peers out through the crack in the window
and bursts out laughing.
What insolence!
